Pros:
The drive to the course takes me right into the heart of wind turbine town, which is a pleasant change of scenery from the flat nothing that is Mid-Michigan. The landscape only got better once I arrived at the course.
The best part of this course has got to be the flowing heather that can be found on nearly every hole. Assuming from the abundant wind turbines, this area receives a great deal of constant breeze, as was the case on my visit. This constant breeze wasn't strong enough to make play difficult, but it did make the heather bob and weave like a fluid Mohammed Ali.
I caught myself staring across the grounds from the elevated tenth tee. With all of the breeze and heather grass dancing away, it is quite a sight.
Not on everyone's "Pro's List" but whomever is responsible for the sand manicuring deserves a raise. I was very pleased with the condition and grooming of the sand.
The proshop had the usual golf essentials in case a person needed a last minute equipment replacement.
Cons:
Ubly isn't exactly a bustling hub of industry, but in turn the locals are very friendly and will stop to chat if you give them a minute. Don't go to Ubly expecting to find a tourist destination. Come prepared with a golf only mindset and leave the "shopping while you golf" family members at home.
While the extremely large wind turbines were a neat curiosity to me, some people may find them distracting.
There is farmland bordering a few holes on the course and the smell carries on the breeze.
Would you play it again, and why?
I will make the hour drive to play this course again at the drop of a hat. The prices were reasonable and the scenery was a pleasant change of typical Michigan pace.
19th Hole / Drink Cart?
The sight features a full country club aspect with showers, lockers, bar, and banquet hall. I did not see a drink cart on my visit, but it was 10am, which didn't stop some of the locals found sitting at the club house bar.
Final Thoughts / Side Notes on the Course:
The course didn't provide too many never before seen holes, but it made up for it's typical Michigan layout with the beautiful landscaping. The water was pristine, the sand immaculate, and the heather grass flowing.
